L'Orrore di Dunwich - The Dunwich Horror

C’è voluto tempo. Potremmo dire eoni. Ma alla fine il nuovo diorama è concluso.

Accompagniamo i professori Armitage, Rice e Morgan, della Miskatonic University, nei pressi dell’antico cerchio di pietre dove l’orrore di Dunwich si è manifestato.

Piovra Volante - Flying Polyp

Avete bisogno di una "miniatura" da contrapporre ai vostri investigatori nel corso di qualche gioco di ruolo lovecraftiano? O volete semplicemente un simpatico oggetto d'arredo che dia un po' di colore alla casa o al vostro tempietto votivo cthuloide? In un caso o nell'altro, una radice contorta, un po' di pasta per modellare e qualche colore vi potranno evitare ingenti spese. Ecco come ho creato la mia Piovra Volante.

Do you need a "miniature" to unleash against your investigators during some Lovecraftian role-playing game session? Or do you just need a cheerful ornament to give your home or your little Cthuloid votive temple a little more colour? In any case, you just need a twisted root, some modeling clay and some paint to avoid significant expenditure. This is how I created my Flying Polyp.

Professor Rice

Approfitto dell'insonnia, in questa torrida notte estiva, per rompere nuovamente il silenzio e ricomparire sul mio blog. Non sono morto, sto solo sognando, per dirla lovecraftianamente.

Il Professor Warren Rice è la terza miniatura che troverà posto nel mio nuovo diorama. La quarta è pronta e ne posterò presto le fotografie su queste pagine digitali. Al diorama manca qualche dettaglio, di quelli di più faticosa realizzazione, ma conto di risolvere la cosa al più presto. Al termine di questa nuova creazione lovecraftiana seguiranno foto e approfondimenti sulle miniature e sulle tecniche usate.

Fino ad allora... Cthulhu fhtagn!

I take advantage of the insomnia, in this hot summer night, to break the silence again and reappear on my blog. I'm not dead, but just dreaming, to say it in a lovecraftian way. 

Professor Warren Rice is the third miniature who will find place in my new diorama. The fourth is ready and I will posti their pictures soon on these digital pages. Some detail is still to be added to the diorama, some of the most difficult realization, but I hope to resolve the issue as soon as possible. At the end of this new lovecraftian creation photos will follow, as well as details about the miniatures and the techniques used here.

Dopo mesi di silenzio più o meno forzato, eccomi ritornato con un ulteriore tassello del mio prossimo diorama: il dottor Morgan, che per i fan di Lovecraft non dovrebbe avere bisogno di presentazioni, soprattutto se messo in relazione con il più noto professor Armitage. Ci siamo quasi...

After months of forced silence (the more or less), here I am with another piece of my next diorama: Dr. Morgan, which should not need any introduction for Lovecraft fans, especially if seen in relation to the best-known Professor Armitage. It's almost done...

 

 

Il Sortilegio della Scrittura - The Sorcery of Writing

Pianificavo da tempo di postare qualche immagine sulle fasi di realizzazione di una delle mie illustrazioni. Di solito non colleziono scansioni dei miei lavori prima che siano finiti, ma talvolta, se il bozzetto mi piace o se ritengo di doverlo eventualmente modificare in seguito, faccio uno strappo a questa non-regola, come nel caso de "Il Sortilegio della Scrittura".

Ecco quindi la mia illustrazione per la copertina del numero 10 della rivista di saggistica "Studi Lovecraftiani", edita dalla Dagon Press di Pietro Guarriello, uno dei massimi esperti di Lovecraft in Italia. Dal bozzetto al lavoro finito.

P.S.: "Il Sortilegio della Scrittura" è stato scelto ieri, 24 novembre, come "Daily Deviation" sul sito "DeviantArt". È la seconda volta che ciò accade, la prima fu il 21 maggio 2008, con "Le Nozze Rosse", ispirato all'opera di George R.R. Martin. Sarà forse scontato scriverlo, ma per me è un grandissimo onore: entrambi questi lavori sono frutto di molto impegno e passione e fa piacere sapere che altri li apprezzino e vogliano dar loro maggiore visibilità, quindi grazie di cuore!

I was planning to post some pictures concerning the realization steps of an illustration of mine from some time. I usually don’t keep scans of my works before they are finished, but sometimes, if I like the sketch or if I think I may have to modify it later, I don’t mind this “non-rule”, as in the case of "The Sorcery of Writing" .

Here is my illustration for the cover of issue # 10 of  "Studi Lovecraftiani", an Italian magazine containing essays on Lovecraft and all its Lovecraft related. The magazine is edited by Pietro Guarriello’s Dagon Press and Pietro is one of the leading experts on Lovecraft in Italy. From the sketch to the finished work.

PS: "The Sorcery of Writing" was chosen yesterday, November 24, as a "Daily Deviation" on the website "DeviantArt". This is the second time this happens (the first time was on May 21, 2008, with "TheRed Wedding", inspired by the George RR Martin’s saga). Writing what I’m going to write may sound obvious, but these award are both a great honor for me, being these works both the result of much effort and passion, so I’m glad to know that others appreciate them and want to give them a greater visibility, so thank you very much!

The sketch was done using pencils and then inked to better define the shapes I had to paint.

Flautista di Azathoth - Flutist of Azathoth

In occasione di una sessione “live” de “Il Richiamo di Cthulhu”, giocata nel lontano 2000, ebbi occasione di creare un pupazzo cthulhoide raffigurante uno dei flautisti che suonano blasfeme melodie innanzi al trono di Azathoth. Dieci anni dopo, il live e il pupazzo sono tornati, riveduti e corretti.

Il costume è montato su un’armatura costruita con tubi di pvc e avanzi di una rete metallica per recinzioni, il tutto tenuto insieme da colla, spago, e speranze... Speranze fortunatamente ben riposte, dato che la struttura ha retto senza collassare su uno dei miei amici che, eroicamente, si è offerto di pilotare la bestia (grazie, Luca!!!).

La testa e la parte anteriore della creatura sono fatti di cartapesta su una base di gommapiuma, sagomata tenendola in tensione con dello spago. Gli occhi sono due frisbee opportunamente dipinti, sui quali sono incollate due mezze sfere (trovate nelle patatine anni fa). I bargigli della bestia sono in stoffa, con l’aggiunta di qualche dettaglio in cartapesta. I numerosi tentacoli sono ricavati da plastica da imballaggio trasparente. Il tutto è stato poi dipinto con la tecnica del pennello asciutto (o drybrush).

Purtroppo il poco spazio a disposizione e le difficoltà di trasporto del costume mi hanno costretto a optare per dei semplici teli di stoffa tinta con la candeggina per celare l’armatura ed il “pilota” della creatura, rinunciando (anche per questioni di tempo) ad un corpo maggiormente definito nella forma.

L’effetto finale, considerate anche le luci basse durante la partita, è stato comunque ottimo.

Il volto della bestia e i tentacoli sono dipinti con uno strato di vernice fosforescente, completamente trasparente alla luce ma luminosa al buio.

I played a “Call of Cthulhu” live session back in 2000, and I had the opportunity to create a cthulhoid puppet representing one of the flutists who play blasphemous melodies before the throne of Azathoth. Ten years later, the larp and the puppet are back, corrected and revised.

The costume is mounted on an armor constructed of PVC pipe and scraps of metal mesh usually used for fencing, all held together by glue, string, and hopes ... Hopes fortunately well placed, since the structure has held up without collapsing on one of my friends who heroically volunteered to drive the beast (thanks, Luca !!!).

The head and front of the creature are made of papier mache on a base of foam, kept in shape with string tension. The eyes are two frisbee properly painted, which are glued on the two half-spheres (found in potato chips years ago). The wattles of the beast are in cloth, with the addition of some detail in paper mache. The many tentacles are made from transparent plastic bubble-wrap. Everything was then painted with the dry brush technique.

Unfortunately, due to the limited space available and the difficulty of transporting the costume, I had to opt for simple pieces of cloth dyed with bleach to cover up the armor and the “pilot” of the creature, giving up (even due to time matters) the idea of making a more defined body shape.

The final effect, considering also the low lights during the game, was still great.
